To cancel a trial before it charges you: identify who bills it, check that provider's deadline and finish cancellation before the deadline. Reopen the plan to confirm its status and end date. A reminder is useful, but it does not stop renewal by itself.

Save the offer before starting

Record the plan name, account used, trial end, price afterwards, billing frequency and cancellation route. Keep the sign-up receipt or offer screen. Include the time and time zone when the offer specifies them.

Check whether the next purchase is a monthly plan, a full year or a payment plan with a longer commitment. A price displayed as a monthly equivalent does not tell you the size of the first payment. Use the actual checkout terms.

An app on your phone can use a subscription bought separately on a website. If the trial is missing from the app store, start with the receipt. Our guide to finding all your subscriptions covers the wider search.

Choose a reminder before the required deadline

Apple instructs trial users to cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends. Google Play says to cancel before the trial expires. Apply the instruction for your billing route rather than treating either as a deadline for every service.

Give yourself time before the required deadline to make the decision and complete the process. Read the access warning first: Spotify ends a free Premium trial immediately on cancellation. Do not assume you can cancel on day one and keep every trial to its original end.

Keep evidence that renewal has stopped

  1. Complete the cancellation flow, including its last confirmation screen.
  2. Reopen the plan and check its status and end date.
  3. Save the confirmation with the account that made the purchase.
  4. Check billing history after the scheduled first payment date.

For Apple, a missing cancellation button or a red expiration message indicates that the subscription is already cancelled. For other billing providers, use their own status explanation. Do not rely on deleting the app: Google Play explicitly says this does not cancel a subscription.

A pending amount needs a separate check

Google Play describes payment authorisations before renewal. Compare a pending card entry with the provider's receipt and billing history; a pending entry and its later settlement are not automatically two purchases.

If a payment has been collected after cancellation, use our charged-after-cancellation checklist. It separates account mix-ups, billing dates and refund requests without assuming the same refund policy in every country.

Decide using the cost after the trial

Keep a free trial's decision date separate from ongoing paid subscriptions. If you want to continue, enter the actual future price and billing frequency from your offer. If you cancel, do not count a hypothetical renewal as an ongoing expense.

Common questions

Can I cancel immediately and keep the whole trial?

Check the offer and the cancellation screen before relying on that. Spotify switches a free trial to Free immediately on cancellation. A paid subscription keeping access until its billing period ends does not establish a rule for every free trial.

Does deleting the app cancel a Google Play trial?

No. Google says uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription. Use the subscription controls for the Google Account that made the purchase and complete the cancellation steps.

What if the first payment has already happened?

Check that future renewal is stopped, then identify the billing provider and the period covered by the payment. Cancellation and a refund request are separate actions. Refund availability depends on the purchase and the applicable provider rules.
