Choose a pause only after checking how it ends. It may suit a break with a known return date. If you do not know whether you will return, check cancellation of the next renewal instead. Confirm the end of paid access and any future charge before closing the page.

Decide whether you want a break or a stopping point

Not watching for a month and not wanting another renewal are different intentions. A pause can be temporary and may restart automatically. Cancellation, account deletion and a refund are also different actions. Read the label and resulting status rather than assuming one button handles all of them.

Checks for different kinds of break
Your intentionWhat to confirm
Return on a known datePause availability, restart date and price on return.
Stop without a return dateCancellation of renewal and the last day of paid access.
Interrupt a prepaid yearWhether the unused time is extended; do not assume it is.
Pause a shared serviceWhose access changes and who can restart it.

Use the account that bills the purchase

Find the receipt. A Google Play purchase belongs to the Google Account used for it. A direct purchase is managed with the provider. A bundled purchase may be controlled by the partner billing you. The device where you use the app does not settle that question.

Our guide to finding subscriptions helps when the purchase is missing. Both Google Play and Netflix say that removing their app does not cancel the subscription.

Google Play: pause only where the plan supports it

On Android, open your Google Play subscriptions and select the purchase. For a supported plan, choose Manage → Pause payments, set the period and confirm. Google describes the pause as starting at the end of the current billing period. Available durations depend on the app and subscription.

If the option is absent, check the app provider’s help and the cancellation choices shown for your purchase. Google also describes payment plans with several committed payments: stopping renewal does not remove the remaining payments of the current commitment.

Netflix: the restart is part of the decision

Netflix describes Pause for 1 Month within its cancellation flow, with restrictions for some plans and payment methods. Access continues until the next billing date, when the pause starts without that charge. After the pause, the current plan price is charged automatically.

You cannot stream or download during the pause. Ending it early triggers an immediate charge and updates the billing date. That makes an early return a purchase decision, not just an invitation to look around the app.

Keep the confirmation and four useful details

  1. The last day of the current paid access.
  2. The actual pause start date.
  3. The restart date, price and whether it is automatic.
  4. What happens to files, downloads and other users’ access.

Set a review reminder before the scheduled restart. For a storage or work service, check its own export and access conditions before leaving important files there. A streaming provider’s pause rules tell you nothing about how another service keeps documents.

If you have already paid for a year, do not assume that a break adds extra time to the end. Check the terms of that plan. Our monthly and annual plan guide explains why payment frequency and commitment length need separate attention.

Account for a short break without erasing future costs

One skipped monthly payment does not remove the whole yearly cost. Record the paused status and planned return while keeping the normal price available. Setting the price permanently to zero would hide the cost when billing resumes.

The calculator assumes regular payments over a year and does not model individual pause dates. You can compare your list with and without a plan, then assess the temporary saving separately. Neither the calculator nor Renelly pauses the provider’s subscription for you.

Common questions

Can I pause any subscription?

No. Google Play offers pausing only for some apps. Netflix also restricts it by plan and payment method. Check the options for the purchase in your billing account. An option available for another service does not establish one for yours.

Does a pause stop billing immediately?

The Google Play and Netflix options described here begin after the current billing period. Check the confirmation for the actual start date and any restart date. Requesting a pause today does not necessarily end the access you have already paid for today.

Will I have to restart the subscription myself?

Do not assume so. Netflix describes automatic billing after the one-month pause. Other plans have their own conditions. Check the confirmation and review the account before any scheduled return if you no longer want to pay.
