Match the old price, new price and first affected renewal. Calculate the difference over a full year, check how much you use the service, and choose whether to keep it, switch plans or stop the next renewal. Make that decision in the account that bills you.

Make sure you are comparing the same purchase

Open the latest receipt and an earlier one. Compare the account, plan, included features, currency and billing period. A monthly charge cannot be compared directly with a yearly payment. A larger bill may also include a new add-on or a plan bought by another person using the account.

Check the original offer if you were paying a discounted amount. Record when that offer ends and what its renewal terms say. If you switched plans, use the change confirmation rather than assuming the previous plan became more expensive.

If there are two separate charges, follow our guide to a subscription charged twice. Identifying two purchases is a different task from comparing two prices.

Turn the notice into a short decision record

Write down the new total, billing cycle, effective date and any response deadline. Open the provider or store account directly and check those details. For a service included in a mobile or internet package, use the partner’s bill and package terms.

Apple says it notifies subscribers before scheduled price increases. Its system distinguishes changes that can proceed under certain conditions from increases requiring agreement. Silence is therefore not a reliable way to cancel every App Store subscription. Read what your own notice requires.

Do not borrow a deadline or consent rule from a different country. Even the same service may present different conditions across markets or billing channels. If the notice and account disagree, ask the billing provider which amount and date apply to your purchase.

Compare the yearly effect, not just the next bill

(New monthly price − old monthly price) × 12 gives the increase across twelve monthly renewals. These euro amounts are made-up examples for a fictional service.

Hypothetical plan: a full year at each monthly price
ScenarioPer monthTwelve months
Old price€8€96
New price€10€120
Increase€2€24

That full-year comparison is not a forecast of the current calendar year. If only four renewals will use the higher price before year-end, count four monthly differences. For an annual plan, subtract the old annual price from the new annual price without multiplying again.

Check what a cheaper alternative actually changes

Look at your recent use: the projects you finished, shows you watched or features you needed. Compare the alternatives against that use. A lower price might mean fewer accounts, fewer features or a different type of access. Include anyone else who depends on the current plan in the decision.

A lower monthly equivalent can also require a year paid upfront. Use our monthly versus annual subscription comparison before buying a longer period just to avoid a small increase. Check the commitment and renewal price as well as the headline rate.

If you decide to leave, complete the cancellation process with the billing provider and keep its confirmation. Record the last day of access. Stopping a future renewal does not itself confirm a refund for a charge already made.

Keep one active entry with the confirmed price

Keep a note of the old amount and change date. Update the active subscription’s price once the new terms are confirmed, along with its cycle and next payment if those changed. Adding another entry for the same purchase would double-count it.

If the next bill does not match the notice, send the provider the relevant receipt and announcement. Ask for an explanation of that purchase rather than assuming all users or plans changed in the same way.

Common questions

Will ignoring a price increase cancel my subscription?

Do not rely on that. Apple distinguishes price changes that can proceed under specific conditions from increases requiring your agreement. Read the notice for your purchase and check its status in the billing account. Other billing providers have their own rules.

Is a higher bill always a subscription price increase?

Check the receipts first. The plan, billing period, currency, discount or added features may have changed. Compare like with like and ask the billing provider to explain any amount you cannot match to the purchase.

Does the annual increase show what I will pay extra this calendar year?

Not necessarily. The monthly difference times twelve describes twelve renewals at the new price. For the remaining calendar year, count only the renewals affected. For an annual subscription, compare the old and new annual charges directly.
