In short: in Settings, tap your name, then Payment & Shipping. Tap the payment method, then Edit, enter the new details and tap Done.

Change your payment method on iPhone

  1. In Settings, tap your name.
  2. Tap Payment & Shipping. You might be asked to sign in to your Apple Account.
  3. Tap the payment method, then tap Edit.
  4. Enter the new billing information, then tap Done.

If editing doesn’t work

Apple suggests adding a new payment method and then removing the old one: tap Add Payment Method, enter the new one, tap Edit, then the red delete button next to the old method and Remove. Check first that your name and billing address match what your bank has on file.

Why the old method sometimes has to stay

While a subscription such as iCloud+ is active, a balance is unpaid, or you are a Family Sharing organiser with purchase sharing on, Apple needs a payment method on file. Replace it rather than removing it. If you want to stop paying through Apple altogether, cancel the subscriptions first and remove the method after the billing period ends.

Which subscriptions this affects

Your Apple Account’s payment method pays for every subscription Apple bills: iCloud+, Apple Music, Apple TV and subscriptions to other apps you started in the App Store. To see which ones you have, open Settings → your name → Subscriptions; the guide on how to see and cancel subscriptions on iPhone explains the list. Subscriptions you pay to a provider directly are updated with that provider.

Common questions

Why can’t I remove my payment method?

Apple requires a payment method while you have, for example, an active subscription such as iCloud+, an unpaid balance, or you are a Family Sharing organiser using purchase sharing. Change the method instead of removing it, or cancel the subscription first.

Do I need to resubscribe after getting a new card?

No. Subscriptions billed by Apple use your Apple Account’s payment method. Update it there and they keep renewing with the new one.

Can I change the order of payment methods?

Yes. If you have more than one payment method, you can choose the order in which Apple charges them under Payment & Shipping.
